Two cops and a pregnant woman are hurt after a man opened fire with a handgun outside the offices of Italy’s new Prime Minister as he was being sworn in a different building nearby.  Premier Enrino Letta was not hurt.

The Italian media names the attacker as 49-year old Luigi Prieti, an unemployment businessman who was reportedly upset over mounting financial and personal issues, including divorce, being unable to insure his daughter, and having to care for aging parents.

One officer was shot in the neck, according to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.  The second cop has a bullet in his leg.  It’s not believed either injury is life threatening.  Shrapnel hurt the pregnant woman.

The suspect’s brother says they haven’t spoken since August but does not believe he suffered from any mental health issues.  Nevertheless, prosecutors ordered a full psychiatric exam for Prieti.
