A US Navy ship rescued a sick one-year-old baby and her family from their crippled boat almost 1500 kilometers off the coast of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean.  The young family was just two weeks into what was supposed to be a round the world sailing trip.

A California Air National Guard crew parachuted into the water and reached the boat, stabilizing the girl until the USS Vandegrift arrived.

Charlotte and Eric Kaufman had attempted to sail across the Pacific Ocean in their boat, the 36-foot Rebel Heart, with their daughters, three-year old Cora and one-year old Lyra.  But the couple sent a distress ping to a satellite Thursday after little Lyra became ill with a fever and rash.  She had been treated for salmonella poisoning before the family set out, but a relative says doctors gave the baby a clean bill of health to travel.

Before day’s end, a four-person Air National Guard team from California's 129th Rescue Wing parachuted into the ocean, inflated a boat, and reached the Rebel Heart to provide immediate medical attention.  The Rebel Heart was also taking on water, bringing an end to this attempt to circumnavigate the globe.
