South Korean President President Park Geun-hye went on national TV to issue another formal apology for the sinking of the passenger ferry Sewol – and to announce new repercussions.  The South Korean Coast Guard is being broken up.

“The ultimate responsibility of the poor response to this accident lies with me,” said a tearful President Park, who added that a Ministry of National Safety be formed to handle search and rescue operations; the investigative functions are being consolidated into the national police.

The Sewol ferry disaster on 16 April killed 286 passengers, most of whom were high school students on a class trip from their school just outside Seoul.  The search for the remaining 18 missing passengers resumed today.
