Dozens of people have been killed in a train derailment in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, in which all 13 carriages came off the tracks and bodies were strewn about.

UPDATE:  The death toll has been steadily climbing since the accident, and the latest from Spanish officials is that more than 60 people were killed, and some 130 are hurt.  It’s clearly the worst rail accident in Spain in several decades.

The train was heading from Madrid to the city of Ferrol on the north coast, where a local holiday was scheduled on Thursday.  It came off the tracks in Santiago de Compostela.

“There are bodies lying on the railway track. It's a Dante-esque scene,” said the leader of the regional government Alberto Nunez Feijoo.  He also said it’s way too early to announce a cause of the accident.

Recovery teams worked the crash site well after the sun went down on Wednesday and will continue their grim task until all survivors are pulled free and all bodies are recovered.
