An Argentine man has learned he was one of hundreds of babies stolen from his birth parents for political reasons and given to another family to be raised.  The identification was made by a group of Grandmothers out to reunite families.

The 37 year old, identified only as “Pablo”, was reunited with his surviving family last week.  Pablo was born to Chilean revolutionary parents, who got caught in Operation Condor, a shameful chapter in South American history in which the fascist dictatorships of the 1970s cooperated to repress and kill perceived Leftist enemies.

Blood tests showed that Pablo’s parents were Angel Athanasiu Jara, a Chilean militant with the Revolutionary Leftist Movement who was captured by Argentine security forces along with Frida Laschan Mellado.  They were murdered by the Argentine military in 1976 and Pablo was given to a family loyal to the regime.

Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo president Estela de Carlotto says Pablo is the 109th person to be identified.  But the group has a list of more than 400 children stolen from political prisoners in Argentina during the Operation Condor.

“This is a battle against time,” Carlotto said.  “To all those who have information or data, those who doubt their identity, come forward so we can resolve this enormous debt that we still have.”
