Two trains collided head on in Switzerland, injuring at least 35 people and possibly more.  Rescuers are still sorting it out at the scene.

This happened at Granges-pres-Marnand in the canton of Vaud, about 38 kilometers north of Lausanne. Officials say it is much too early to determine a cause, but they can say that for some reason the trains en route to and from Lausanne wound up on the same track.  Neither was a high speed train.

The driver of one of the trains was still unaccounted for and thought to be inside the wreckage.  Heavy machinery was brought in to try to free him.

It’s the third incident of transportation mishaps in Europe in recent days.  Last Wednesday, a high-speed train in northwestern Spain derailed after apparently taking a bend too quickly, killing 78.  And over the weekend, a bus filled with catholic pilgrims plunged off a bridge in Italy, leaving at least 38 people dead.
