Two Syrian rebel groups claim to have shelled President Bashar al-Assad’s motorcade, but Syrian state TV is denying the mortars hit their targets.

The rebels posted videos to the Internet showing smoke rising over the targeted area. The opposition as well as residents in the heavily guarded Malki district also reported what seemed to be the sound of several incoming mortar explosions in the early morning.

But Syrian TV showed Assad unharmed in a Damascus mosque after the attack, taking part in Eid al-Fitr prayers to mark the end of Ramadan.

Assad may have escaped the assassination attempt, but the rebels at the very least have shown they are now able to strike at the neighborhood where the president lives and works.
