Heavily armed gunman killed at the very least ten people in a massive and coordinated attack at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan.  Gunshots and explosions raged on throughout the night and commandos are being deployed to retake the airport.

At least a dozen militants were disguised as police and had ID cards when they stormed a terminal used for VIPs and cargo in Pakistan’s largest city.  The staff has been evacuated, all operations at the terminal are suspended, and all flights in and out of Karachi are being diverted.  It’s believed that the staffers killed were members of Pakistan’s Airport Security Force (ASF), but possibly airline workers were killed as well.

“I was working at my office when I heard big blasts – a several blasts – and then there were heavy gunshots,” said Sarmad Hussein of Pakistan International Airlines.  He and a colleague escaped by jumping out a window, but the coworker broke a leg.

Pakistan has been fighting an Islamist insurgency for more than a decade, and it’s not yet known which terrorist group staged the attack.
