The Obama Administration has responded to hazy intelligence about the possible use of chemical weapons by Syria with a perfectly nebulous statement.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that US intelligence agencies believe “with varying degrees of confidence” that Syria has used chemical weapons against rebels.

The chemical agent is Sarin, but Hagel did not specify when or where it was used.

The phrase “varying degrees of confidence” is used to say that not all of American intelligence agencies are in agreement.

The White House has warned chemical weapons use would be a "red line" for possible intervention, but it telling US Lawmakers that this intelligence does not represent proof.

“Given the stakes involved, and what we have learned from our own recent experiences, intelligence assessments alone are not sufficient - only credible and corroborated facts that provide us with some degree of certainty will guide our decision-making," said a letter signed by White House director of the office of legislative affairs Miguel Rodriguez.

The one thing that is clear in the statement is that the evidence is unclear.  Despite that, conservative Republican lawmakers began rumblings of possibly arming the Syrian Rebels (which include factions of al Qaeda militants) and stepping up US military involvement in Syria’s 2-year-old civil war.

Earlier this week, Israeli Brigadier General Itai Brun said that photographic evidence indicated that Syria used Carin Gas against the rebels.
