Tuesday begins a sixth day for the nationwide protests against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and an umbrella group for the demonstrators has released its demands.

(Here’s a great video explaining how Turkey’s national protests came to be)

Taksim Solidarity says the government must release all jailed protesters across the nation and drop all charges against them;  All public officials who gave or carried out orders to suppress the protests must resign, including Istanbul’s Police Commissioner;  The ban on public demonstrations must be rescinded;  And Gezi Park must remain a park, with no new construction.

Gezi Park is ground zero for the protests, which began with people opposed to Prime Minister Erdogan’s plan to develop it into military barracks and a shopping mall.  The heavy-handed police response ordered by Erdogan sparked a wide range of groups into action.  Labor, LGBT, and Education groups, as well as the urban middle class joined in.  Together, they represent resentment of Erdogan’s increasing authoritarianism and Islamic bias in what’s supposed to be a democracy and secular country.
