Kenyan security forces say they tracked and killed more than 100 Islamist militants and destroyed their camp in Somalia, after Saturday’s terrorist ambush of a Nairobi-bound bus from which 28 non-Muslim passengers were separated from the rest and murdered.
Somalia’s al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for attacking the unarmed civilians on the bus. The dead are 19 men and nine women who were not able to recite Koran verses at gunpoint.
“Two successful operations were carried out against the perpetrators of these murderous executions across the border,” said Deputy President William Ruto. “Our retaliatory action left in its trail more than 100 fatalities.”
Ruto added that four “technicals” pickup trucks with machine guns mounted on the back – were destroyed in the raid.
“Our message to them is clear – you may sneak and attack innocent civilians. But for any attack on Kenya and its people, we shall pursue you wherever you go,” Ruto said, refusing to dignify the terrorists by mentioning their name.
Across the African continent, no such vengeance is coming for Boko Haram at the moment. Nigerian security officials say they have no information about Boko Haram’s latest attack on the fishing village of Doron Baga on the shores of Lake Chad. Boko Haram often destroys cell phone towers, preventing news of its atrocities from getting out for several days. But witnesses say the terrorists came in to town and began shooting people on sight.
“I counted 60 bodies with my own eyes,” said local fisherman Usman Abubakar, who added that he sent his wife and children away to the other side of the country after the attack.
This is the latest in a string of Boko Haram atrocities against civilians in Doron Baga. In 2003, Boko Haram attacked and 200 people were killed, many in the crossfire between the terrorists and Nigerian troops. They’ve returned several times, kidnapping boys to become soldiers.
