Tensions in Ukraine are escalating at a rapid pace.  Forces loyal to Kiev killed at least five pro-Russian militants during operations to take down their barricades around an eastern city.  In response, Russia said its troops, which are menacingly position just over the border, would begin new military drills.

Ukrainian troops moved in on three checkpoints operated by the pro-Russian separatists surrounding Slavyansk, according to the government in Kiev.  A spokeswoman for the self-appointed pro-Russian mayor of Slavyansk claims another militant was killed at yet another impromptu roadblock outside the city.  The Russian response was swift.

“If the Kiev regime has started to use the army against the population inside the country, it beyond any doubt is a very grave crime,” said Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that if the violence expanded, there would be “consequences.”  There are some 40,000 Russian troops just over the eastern border.  Some were ordered to begin maneuvers.

Washington says there will be more and deeper economic consequences for Moscow if it continues to threaten Ukraine.

“If Russia continues in this direction, it will not just be a grave mistake, it will be an expensive mistake,” said US Secretary of State John Kerry, accusing Russia of deception and destabilization in Ukraine.  He did not specify what the new sanctions would be, but said, “The window (for Russia) to change course is closing.. We are ready to act.”
