Crimea’s referendum to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation is invalid, according to a new non-binding resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly.

The resolution does not mention Russia by name.  But it “calls upon all States, international organizations and specialized agencies not to recognize any alteration of the status” of Crimea and Sevastopol.

100 nations voted in favor of the resolution and only 11 explicitly opposed it.  That leaves more than 80 countries that either abstained, didn’t show up to vote, or didn’t pay their UN dues.  But Western diplomats said the vote was even better than they expected and shows how isolated Russia really is on this issue.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsia said the international community has rejected Russia’s military moves to take Crimea.

“This text is also about respect of territorial integrity and non use of force to settle disputes,” he said.  “It sends an essential message that the international community will not allow what has happened in Crimea to set a precedent for further challenges to our rules based international framework.”
