And by "unmerry" we mean "evil".  It seems incredible that this sort of thing could still happen in Europe, but it did.  There is growing outrage at Romania’s state television network for broadcasting a disgusting, anti-Semitic Christmas carol in programming targeted for rural areas.

In the broadcast, a smug-looking small choir is seen performing the song, which uses a pejorative word for a Jew; says God, should not let them live on Earth; and indirectly glorifies the Holocaust by suggesting they should be burned.  The show’s host then thanks the choir.

The TVR channel then released a statement claiming that it was not responsible for selecting the Christmas songs, but merely broadcasting carols selected by a cultural center dedicated to preserving the traditional culture of the northwestern Cluj region.  That didn’t fly with MCA Romania, a group that fights anti-Semitism, which immediately complained to Romanian President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Romania’s Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean harshly condemned the event and called on the public prosecutor's office and parliament to bring those responsible to justice.   Israel's embassy said it was “concerned” about the broadcast.  The US Embassy sharply criticized the TV network.

TVR’s leader and management were already in the process of being sacked and replaced.  The day before the grossly offensive broadcast, a parliament investigation concluded the station had been mismanaged.

During World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews were killed in Romania and areas it controlled as an ally of Nazi Germany.  Romania only began to commemorate the Holocaust in 2004.
