Seven people are dead in post-election violence in Venezuela, with Enrique Capriles and his supporters hurling accusations of vote fraud (as well as chunks of concrete) in the very narrow election result.

Clashes were sporadic on Tuesday, but Monday’s fighting between Capriles’ supporters and police had left seven people dead, with more than 60 injured and 139 arrested.

Hugo Chavez’ hand-picked successor Nicolas Maduro was declared to have won by 50.8 percent to 49 percent.  That’s a difference of only about 265,000 votes.  He blamed the US for the violence, which in turn appeared to not accept the election result.

Capriles is demanding a recount, and at one point asked his supporters to rally outside the national election agency on Wednesday.  But he’s called off that rally as the violence grows, and after Maduro he would not allow the rally to go on.  Maduro banned the rally accused the opposition of attempting to stage a coup.
