The US strongly suspects the Russians of bugging a phone call between two senior American diplomats and releasing the embarrassing contents to the world.  The two were discussing Ukraine’s future and made disparaging remarks about some of the major players in that nation’s strife.

“I would say that since the video was first noted and tweeted out by the Russian government, I think it says something about Russia's role,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters, stopping just short of directly accusing Russia of surreptitiously recording the call and posting it to YouTube.

In it, the top US diplomat for Europe, Victoria Nuland, and the US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, are heard discussing Ukraine opposition leaders, and saying that the former heavyweight boxing world champion Vitali Klitscho should not be in any new government.

“I don't think it's a good idea,” says the voice identified as Victoria Nuland, adding “I think Yats (Arseniy Yatseniuk) is the guy who's got the economic experience.”

Nuland is also caught trashing the European Union’s involvement in Ukraine saying, “F—k the EU.”  Ouch.

Klitschko and Yatseniuk are the acknowledged leaders of the anti-government protest movement that’s been camped out around government buildings in Kiev.  They want pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovich to step aside for fresh elections.
