Colombia’s presidential election is next Sunday, and a newly revealed video of the leading candidate apparently discussing illegal interceptions with a former advisor might throw an unexpected turn into the race.

Opposition candidate Oscar Ivan Zuluaga has a narrow poll lead over his closest rival, the incumbent President Juan Manuel Santos, who has staked his political future on peace talks with Marxist rebels who’ve waged a 50-year civil war.

Earlier this month, authorities busted a far right political operative at a mysterious office who had allegedly been illegally eavesdropping on messages going in and out of the peace talks.  And until now, candidate Zuluaga has denied any contact with the man.

But Colombia’s Semana news magazine published a video of Zuluaga apparently discussing the illegal interceptions with the man – who turns out to be an associate of Zuluaga’s advisor.

Colombia’s civil war has seen hundreds of thousands of people killed, and millions displaced since the two sides began fighting in the 1960s.  But the idea of ending the conflict peacefully has met with strong opposition from the far right.
