The leader of an Islamic Fundamentalist political party in Bangladesh has been sentenced to death for war crimes stemming from that nation’s bid for independence from Pakistan in 1971.  Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s allies will appeal the sentence, which sparked rioting that killed at least 30 people.

This follows huge demonstrations in Dhaka of people demanding justice against those accused of atrocities.

The tribunal found Sayedee guilty of multiple counts of crimes against humanity, including charges of looting, torching villages, raping women and forcing minority Hindus to convert to his brand of Islam during the war.

The red-bearded Syedee went on to be a member of parliament and the leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.  He’s the third leader of that party to be convicted and more trials are underway.
