El Salvador’s Presidential election has a winner, for now – Europe moves against two African nations for draconian anti-gay laws – Princess Diana did WHAT? – And a lot more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:

Former Marxist rebel Salvador Sanchez Ceren is the winner of El Salvador’s contentious presidential election, achieving victory with a just a 7,000 vote advantage.  But the election commission says it won’t certify the result until after Conservative Norman Quijano files his appeal.  Quijano’s call for a new election has already been rejected.  Sancchez will be the first former rebel to become President.

The European Parliament has approved a non-binding referendum on sanctions against Uganda and Nigeria to protest against their recent passing of anti-gay laws.  MEPs called the laws a “grave menace” against human rights.  The referendum says the two countries violated the Cotonou accord on human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law.  It calls for targeted sanctions, such as travel and visa bans, against “the key individuals responsible for drafting and adopting” the laws.

An allegedly drunk driver drove into a crowd at Austin, Texas’ famed South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival, killing two people and injuring at least 23 others.  The driver was allegedly trying to avoid a police checkpoint to prevent this sort of thing.  The SXSW Festival draws large crowds to the capital of Texas every year for new and established musical acts, film, and technology.  55 Australian bands, solo artists, and producers are performing at this year’s SXSW, where representatives from global music firms trawl for new talent.

Recovery crews have found an eighth body in the rubble of a gas explosion in New York City that leveled two buildings.  At least nine others are still missing and 63 people were hurt.  Hopes of finding anyone else alive are quickly fading.  The explosion occurred Wednesday morning, spraying debris for hundreds of meters around the site in Spanish Harlem.

Four people died in a helicopter crash in Norfolk, UK.  The civilian aircraft crashed in Gillingham, near Beccles and all four people on board were pronounced dead at the scene.  Witnesses report fog in the area at the time of the crash.

Princess Diana allegedly supplied the Murdoch-owned tabloid News Of The World with an internal royal phone directory.  This is according to testimony provided by the paper's royal editor Clive Goodman at the Murdoch Tabloid phone hacking trial at the Old Bailey.  He claims the Princess was attempting to recruit him as an ally in her increasingly acrimonious marriage with Prince Charles.  Goodman is charged with conspiring to cause misconduct in public office by paying a public official for the directories.

Pangolins are now the “most traded wild animal” by traffickers, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.  The armor-like scales that protect them from predators are use in traditional Chinese medicine for their bogus medicinal value.  These anteater-like mammals are smuggled from African and Southeast Asia and trade for US$600 per kilogram, twice what they sold for just five years ago.  Chinese authorities seize 10,000 animals per year, but that’s only a dent in what’s became an incredibly huge illicit trade.

The big, giant search engine Google is encrypting searches made by people in China, so that users can avoid official scrutiny and censorship of their results.  Users in the US, UK, and other countries have had the option to encrypt since 2010.
