Scotland has rejected the Independence Referendum by a larger margin than polls had suggested, with “Yes” votes totaling just over 45 percent, and “No” just fewer than 55 percent in the binary poll.  Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, leader of the pro-independence “Yes” side has already conceded defeat.  However, it is likely the British politics will change drastically, as the leaders of the three major parties have promises to devolve more power and autonomy to the Scottish Parliament.

A Florida man shot and killed his six young grandchildren and his daughter before turning the gun on himself.  The children ranged in age from 3 months to 11 years.  This happened in the town of Bell, which is more akin to the American Deep South than the tropical peninsula most people imagine Florida to be.  The shooter is identified as 51-year old Don Charles Spirit, a man with a vast criminal background – including the time he “accidentally” shot and killed his 8-year old son in 2003.

The United States Senate approved President Barack Obama’s plan to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State.  Leaders of both parties endorsed the legislation.  America’s congress has been bitterly divided along party lines, especially during Obama’s presidency, but always seems to find majorities when it comes to military action.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is accusing CNN and other foreign media outlets of spreading false reports about a mysterious illness.  Eight people died of unknown causes hours after checking into a hospital in Maracay City.  Their symptoms were alike:  High fevers and blotches on their skin.  But the panic has died down and no new deaths were reported.  Maduro is considering legal action, saying the coverage was like “attacks like we haven't seen in 15 years of revolution”.

Chile arrested three members of a self-styled anarchist group for the bombing at a busy subway station earlier this month in which 14 people were injured.  Authorities say one of the suspects is believed to have carried out the attack while two others were accomplices.  The suspects reportedly deny any wrongdoing.

Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik is becoming even more of a right-wing extremist in prison, according to his father.  On 22 July 2011, Breivik detonated a bomb in Oslo killing eight people.  He then took an assault weapon to a Labour Party youth camp and murdered 69-more people, most of them teenagers.  Jens Breivik says he fears his idiot son’s fascist, anti-immigrant views will inspire other right-wing extremists.

Thailand’s military ruler General Prayuth Chan-ocha is apologizing for suggesting the murders of two British tourists might be related to the female victim having worn a bikini.  “They think our country is beautiful and safe and they can do whatever they want, wear bikinis wherever they like,” said of foreigners.  He later apologized for speaking too “harshly” and said he was only trying to warn tourists.  Prayuth’s words might seem strange considering Bangkok’s reputation for sleazy sex tourism, but Thailand itself is a more conservative society.  Meanwhile, the murders of David Miller and Hannah Witheridge – who were found killed on a remote island beach on Monday – remain unsolved.

Geez, what a violent bummer of a newsday.. hey I know:  Puppies!
