New Zealand Police arrested an 18-year old woman who allegedly entered a home in Hamilton and stole an eight-week old baby from his bed.  The child was later dropped off at a police station by a person known to the offender, and is back with his “distraught” parents.  The suspect is due in court tomorrow.

Australia and the US announced the end of sanctions against Fiji after elections ended eight years of military rule.  Of course, folks voted for the military rulers, but supposedly this is fine.  Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she was committed to “normalizing” relations between Canberra and Suva now that military strongman Frank Bainimarama is an elected civilian leader.

There’s outrage in the Christian south of Nigeria over the case of a 14-year old child bride who used ray poison to kill her 35-year old lousy pedophile husband.  Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against Wasila Tasi’u, a girl from an impoverished Muslim family in the north where Sharia Law often runs counter to the secular law in the south. Tasi’u refused to answer when asked if she understood the charges.  The judge entered a plea of not guilty for her.  Activists say the girl ought to be freed and rehabilitated.

A man who allegedly shot and killed a Pennsylvania State Police Officer and then disappeared into the woods for 48 days has been captured.  33-year old Eric Frein was the subject of a lengthy manhunt across the Pocono Mountains involving some 200 officers.  The eventually found the self-styled survivalist hiding out in an airplane hangar.  Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty.

National Guard troops have arrived in a town in Hawaii that’s threatened by a slow-moving lava flow from the Kilauea Volcano.  The molten lava is slowly creeping towards the main road through Pahoa on the Big Island, where homeowners have openly fretted about potential looters targeting evacuated homes.  Officials don’t know when the lava will reach the road and the homes, but the ooze has been going on since 1983, so it doesn’t seem to be stopping. 

Costa Rica has issued an emergency alert after ash from the Turrialba volcano an erupting volcano reached the capital San Jose some 50 kilometers away.  Many residents are being directed to temporary shelters as a precaution.  Eyewitnesses reported fiery explosions and ash falling like snow over parts of central Costa Rica.  It’s Turrialba’s largest eruption in more than a century.

Colombia’s Marxist FARC rebels are taking responsibility and admitting the rebel group’s actions “have affected civilians” during 50 years of internal conflict in which 220,000 have died.  The government and the rebels are in negotiations to end the war and bring the 8,000 strong FARC in to the political process.  The two sides have also reached agreements on land reform and curbing the flow of drugs
