The American Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is temporarily banning travelers from bringing any amount of liquid, gel or aerosol in their carry-on luggage aboard flights between the US and Russia.  This follows a warning from the Department of Homeland Security that terrorists could target the Olympic games with explosive components hidden in toothpaste tubes.  Russia already enacted a similar ban to internal travelers last month.

Doctors are concerned about the health of the world’s most-famous castaway.  Jose Salvador Alvarenga was readmitted to hospital suffering severe dehydration and a deficit of “vitamins and minerals”.  The El Savadoran native had been working as a fisher in Mexico when he was apparently lost at sea in December 2012, not washing ashore in the Marshall Islands until a few days ago.  Meanwhile, the family of the other man in Alvarenga’s boat is demanding answers about how and why he died early in the ordeal.

The former director of Brazil's state-owned bank has been arrested in Italy, where he fled to avoid a 12-year prison sentence.  However, it is unlikely Italy will extradite Henrique Pizzolato because he holds dual Italian nationality.  Pizzolato was convicted of using public funds to buy political support for a past government, but maintains he is innocent of the charges.

The top United Nations envoy to the Central African Republic is urging the interim government to make examples of the soldiers who were seen chasing down a suspected former rebel, beating and stabbing him to death, and dragging his body through the streets of the capital Bangui.  It happened minutes after President Catherine Samba-Panza had finished addressing the troops, and in full view of journalists.

The bodies of eight formerly-missing men were recovered from a South African gold mine.  They were killed when a small earthquake caused a rockslide deep inside the shaft, which hit some equipment and caused a fire.

The European Union is warning Turkey after parliament passed draconian legislation to limit Internet freedom.  The government will be able to block websites at will and require Internet providers to keep records on Web users' activities for two years for authorities.  It’s happening as Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reigns in the judiciary and police to contain a deeply embarrassing corruption investigation.

UK Actor Bill Roache of the long-running soap opera Coronation Street has been cleared of rape and sexual assault charges.  The 81-year old says he never even met his accusers, let alone attacked them.  Roache has played Ken Barlow since Coronation Street began in 1960.

Just a day after agreeing to them, North Korea is threatening to cancel family reunions with South Korea, if the latter goes through with annual military exercises it holds with the Untied States later this month.  Pyongyang has unceremoniously pulled the plug on such meetings in the past, and tried to use such meetings as leverage in unrelated negotiations.  Seoul isn’t backing down.

Speaking of regular exercises, the crew at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo held its biannual “What do we do if a Gorilla escapes?” drill.  Once again, the staff at Ueno Zoo won.  Which wasn’t terribly surprising because the thing was rigged and the Gorilla was a 153-centimeter tall female staffer Natsumi Uno in a cartoon Gorilla suit (seriously, was Andy Serkis too busy?).  Sugoi na!

FIVE.  Aussie Suzy Walsham ran straight up into the record books with her fifth victory at the annual Empire State Building Run-up in New York City.  She climbed 86 flights of stairs in 11 minutes, 57 seconds, winning the women’s competition.  Darren Wilson, also of Australia, finished second in the men's race with a time of 10:21.
