Despite mortar fire and shootings, more than 600 people have been evacuated from the rebel-held Old Quarter of the central Syrian city of Homs.  UN and Syrian Red Crescent teams also managed to deliver relief supplies to the quarter, which has been besieged by government forces for more than a year.

Tunisia police say they’ve arrested the Islamist gunman who killed a leading progressive politician last year, leading to months of political strife.  The suspect Hmed el-Melki – alias “Somali” – was captured after a fierce gunfight outside Tunis.  The killing of Mohamed Brahmi last July brought immediate street protests which pressured the country into adopting a new constitution, one of the most progressive constitutions in the Arab world.

Eight people were shot to death in an attack on a faith healer’s home in Karachi, Pakistan’s most-violent city.  An eight-year old girl is among the dead.  Investigators say the gunmen were on three motorcycles and attacked the home with 9-millimeter pistols.

A private security guard armed with a rifle opened fire at worshippers in a cathedral in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on Russia’s far eastern Sakhalin Island, killing a nun and a parishioner and wounding six others.  This is thousands of kilometers away from the Winter Olympics in Sochi.  Law enforcement officers detained the 24-year-old man at the scene and were trying to determine his motive.  In Moscow, the head of the Orthodox Church said the victims were heroes.

Protesters marched through Ukraine’s capital, but not to condemn the government – they were blasting the European Union for what they perceive as its silence during the political crisis in Ukraine.  The anti-government protests began in November when the government rejected a trade pact with the EU in favor of deeper economic ties to Moscow.  Some 70,000 anti-government demonstrators maintained the main protest camp in Kiev.

Meanwhile in Sarajevo, hundreds marched through the streets to accuse police of abusing protesters arrested over the past few days.  People are upset and demanding the government step down for failing to control widespread unemployment.  At least 10 protesters are still being held, and dozens who’ve been released showed signs of having been smacked around by cops.

Rio de Janeiro police arrested a man in connection with the explosive device that left a news photographer severely injured.  During last week’s protests against public transportation fare hikes, an explosive detonated beside cameraman Santiago Andrade who suffered serious head injuries and is still fighting for his life in a Rio hospital.  The suspect says he “found” the explosive, but someone else set it off.

The mysterious castaway who turned up in the Marshall Islands after saying he spent 13 months at sea has been moved to an undisclosed location to avoid the media. Jose Salvador Alvarenga’s repatriation to El Salvador has been put off because of his health.  He’s been in and out of the hospital since his rescue.

Master thespian Shia LeBeouf inexplicably stormed out of a Berlin press conference for his new film “Nymphomaniac”, and later showed up at the premiere wearing a bag over his head with the words, “I am not famous anymore,” written on it.  And hours before that, he almost got into a bar brawl.  So, Shia’s working really hard on the wish not to be famous anymore.
