Ban Ki-moon uses his strongest language on Gaza yet – Moron protesters in France completely miss the point, and engage in the sort of "collective punishment" they were supposedly protesting – It isn’t Ganja that’s causing cottonmouth in the Caribbean– And a lot more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the site of the crash of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine looked more like a “garden clean-up” than a forensic investigation.  At least 27 Australian passengers were among the 298 people killed when Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 was shot out of the sky by what is widely suspected to have been a Russian-made missile fired by Russian-backed rebels.  Abbott says he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since the disaster – And although Putin said the right things, Abbot says he must live up to his word.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing of up to a hundred Palestinians in Gaza by Israeli shelling as an “atrocious action”.  Palestinian officials say Israeli shelling on Sunday killed some 100 people, mostly civilians.  Ban is calling for an immediate end to almost two weeks of fighting, a thought echoed by US President Barack Obama.

The UN Security Council held an emergency closed-door emergency meeting on Sunday night on the Gaza conflict.  The council expressed serious concern for the escalation of violence; called for respect of international law specifying the protection of civilians; and called on both Israel and Hamas to return to abiding by the terms of the 2012 ceasefire.  The council also asked for Egypt to make another attempt at brokering a ceasefire.

Another attempt at an illegal protest of Israel’s actions in Gaza went totally off the rails in a Paris suburb, as vandals looted shops and cops upped their response from tear gas to rubber bullets.  France banned anti-Israel protests for fear of just this sort of thing.  Sarcelles is a multi-cultural town with a large Jewish population.  The rioters set fire to Jewish shops and lobbed fireworks and Molotov cocktails at two Synagogues, oblivious to the fact that these targets in France have absolutely nothing to do with the fighting in Gaza or the actions of the Israeli government.  A Jewish community group says anti-Semitic attacks are increasing in frequency in France.

The UN Nuclear Watchdog agency says Iran has converted all of its enriched uranium into a more harmless form that cannot be used in the manufacture of nuclear weapons.  The US said last week it would unblock US$2.8 Billion frozen Iranian funds in return for Tehran’s compliance.  The major world powers last week agreed to a four-month extension to talks aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Gunmen on a motorcycle have killed at least four people and injured several others in the Kenyan city of Mombasa.  Witnesses described an indiscriminate attack carried out by masked attackers.  The port city has seen a wave of violence in recent months, mostly attributed to the Somali terror group al-Shabab.  But the victims were from the same Luo ethnic group as President Uhuru Kenyatta, and the gunmen reportedly threw leaflets saying the attack was revenge for an earlier Luo attack on Mpeketoni people.

India arrested a skating instructor at a school for allegedly raping a six-year old student.  Investigators say the suspect’s computer had videos of other children being attacked as well.  Parents at the school in the tech hub city Bangalore have been boycotting the school over what they say were officials’ attempts to cover-up the assault.

In Mexico, police released the owner of an incredibly filthy, feces strewn group home from which they rescued hundreds of children from squalid conditions and alleged sexual assaults.  79-year old “Mama Rosa” del Carmen Verduzco was seen by many as a Mother Teresa-like figure for taking is thousands of homeless children over the years.  Cops raided after complaints from former residents, and are still holding eight of Mama Rosa’s employees.  But the complainants say she was not part of the abuse.

The head of Jamaica’s most prominent human rights group has resigned over a sex education program that the organization introduced in children's group homes.  The program is intended to prevent the spread of HIV in Jamaica, but critics say it was inappropriate for youngsters because of references to anal sex – still a crime on the notoriously homophobic Caribbean island.  The group “Jamaicans for Justice” has said it did not properly vet the content of the sex education program for young wards of the state.

Jamaica expects a drought to get worse, even when the rainy season starts in October.  Water supplies are way down, and water is being trucked into parched agricultural areas.  There’s a ban on filling up swimming pools and watering lawns, and people caught wasting water are risking a 30-day jail sentence.  The drought is actually straining several Caribbean nations – for instance, the island of St. Lucia is under emergency water restrictions and Venezuela has been rationing supplies.
