More trouble for Rolf – South Sudan rebels take more territory in the week-old civil conflict – A French peacekeeper in Africa sports a very war-like motto on his uniform – Sweden beats the nazis.

British authorities are filing three more sex assault charges against Rolf Harris, in addition to the 13 charges the 83-year old Australian entertainer was already facing.  Rolf is expected to enter a plea in mid January.  The new counts allege crimes against females aged 19 in 1984, aged 14 in 1975, and aged seven or eight in 1968 or 1969.  The 19-year-old is the same complainant as in six of the earlier counts.

Former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky says he will do all he can to free other political prisoners, without formally re-entering politics back in Russia.  President Vladimir Putin pardoned and released Khodorkovsky on Friday, who then made a beeline to Germany.  Jailed for ten years for supposed tax evasion, Khodorkovsky was considered a political prisoner by most human rights organizations.

A UN Official says rebels have taken Jonglei state, a key province in South Sudan, and there are tales of summary executions in rebel-held areas.  Civilians are seeking refuge on a UN compound, and there are many more hiding in the bush.  The clashes broke out more than a week ago between government troops backing President Salva Kiir of the majority Dinka ethnic group, and members of the Nuer community who support a former official.  South Sudan has more than 200 ethnic groups, no dominant religion, and too damned many guns.  Meanwhile, US forces got the rebels to agree not to shoot at them, and evacuated Americans stranded in the war torn country.

A French soldier in the Central African Republic is in hot water for wearing a patch with a nazi motto on it, a round patch carrying the number 32 on a French flag and the words “Meine Ehre heisst Treue” (“my honour is loyalty”).  And the photo was posted on the French army's official external operations Facebook page before it was taken down.  According to La Depeche du Midi newspaper, the soldier is from the elite 8th Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment.  An army spokesman says it is “unacceptable”.

Thousands of Swedes took to the streets of a Stockholm suburb for an anti-racism rally, the same place where one week earlier a group of nazis attacked a much smaller gathering of mums with prams and still were chased away.  The earlier row in one of Europe’s wealthiest capitals came as a shock in a country that prides itself as being the continent’s champion of social justice.  Solidarity protests were held throughout Sweden and Europe, and guess what?  The nazis stayed in their hidey holes.

Apple signed a deal to bring the iPhone to China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier with 760 million subscribers.  Previous attempts to sell iPhine in the land that makes them haven’t worked out, as less expensive Samsung and Chinese brands undercut Apple’s high prices.  This time, Apple will offer the ritzy iPhone 5s and the cheaper iPhone 5c.

A major ice storm has cut the power to almost a half million people and killed at least six in Eastern Canada.  Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says it’s one of the city’s worst storms, ever.  Rob Ford?  Yep, that Rob Ford, the crack-smoking buffoon of a mayor of Canada’s largest city.  Stripped of most of his powers because of the crack-smoking scandal, he’s stopped short of declaring a state of emergency.  But aid is getting out into affected areas anyway, because provincial officials are ignoring him and going direct to city agencies to get the job done.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro visited Fidel Castro in Cuba, to celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the regional bloc ALBA, which was founded by Maduro’s predecessor Hugo Chavez nine years ago.  The two released photos of themselves analyzing a copy of the map used by Marshal Sucre during the Battle of Ayacucho, which put an end to Spanish colonial domination in South America.
