The pilot of missing Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 plotted a course to a remote island in the southern Indian Ocean on his home flight simulator – but Captain Zaharie Shah deleted the files before the ill-fated flight on 8 March.  Forensic investigators were able to retrieve the files from his hard drive.  Shah also had made no plans for anything in his life after 8 March.  It doesn’t necessarily rule out another cause, but Malaysian investigators say that Shah is now the prime suspect in the disappearance.  Six Australians were among to the 239 passengers and crew to go missing.

An informal referendum calling for full democracy in Hong Kong is getting way more votes than expected.  On Day Three of a ten-day voting period, more than 689,000 ballots had been cast.  That’s equal to almost one-fifth of the number of registered voters in Hong Kong.  Organizers calling themselves “Occupy Central” expected to get 100,000 people participating in total.  Beijing strongly condemns the exercise, calling it “illegal and invalid”.

Participation on the Hong Kong referendum is high, despite a massive online attack on Occupy Central’s computers.  The security company CloudFlare says that the denial of service attack on Occupy Central’s voting platform was “one of the largest and most persistent” ever.  Occupy Central suspect it was carried out by the central government in Beijing.
