President Joko Widodo appointed Indonesia’s first female foreign minister.  Retno Marsudi is a career diplomat and was most recently Ambassador to the Netherlands.  Two decades ago in her first posting in Australia, her car was damaged in protests over the 1991 Santa Cruz massacre in East Timor.  Despite this, her years of experience are expected to be an asset to Jokowi’s government, which could wind up with eight women as ministers.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko plans to hold talks on forming a government after his bloc came out on top in the parliamentary elections.  Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s party will likely be a key partner, as “Yats” is considered one of Washington’s go-to guys in Kiev.  The Pro-Russian Communist party failed to clear five percent and will be without representation for the first time.  In fact, pro-Western parties dominated the poll, since the two eastern areas controlled by Russian-backed rebels were unable to vote.

Uruguay’s President election will go to a run-off.  The top finisher in weekend elections is Tabare Vasquez, from the same part as outgoing President Jose Mujica (the guy who decriminalized marijuana).  Although Vasquez finished the first round more than ten points ahead of conservative Luis Lacalle Pou, the runoff could be tighter as the younger, more telegenic challenger’s star is on the rise.

Qatar is denying the country is supporting radical groups in Syria including Islamic State (IS).  Officials say Qatar had only provided support to moderate militants, in co-ordination with the CIA and other Western and Arab intelligence agencies.  Doha is also believed to have links to the al-Nusra Front, an al Qaeda affiliate.
