Bangladesh’s opposition greets elections with boycotts and deadly violence – Immigrants demand and end of Israel’s endless incarceration law – Firefighters forced to battle a blaze way past their equipment’s reach.

Turnout was low and violence was rampant in Bangladesh’s elections.  At least 19 people were reported dead in political violence, and 440 polling stations were closed early because of security concerns; turnout was only 22 percent.  The Islamist opposition boycotted the elections and called for a two-day strike.

Indonesia’s Mount Sinbung is still spitting ash and gas thousands of meters into the air after this weekend’s eruption.  Some 20,000 thousand villagers have been evacuated from the surrounding area on the western island of Sumatra since the first eruptions in September 2013. 

Former oil tycoon and Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky arrived in Switzerland, where he now has a Visa to stay for three months.  Khodorkovsky last month was released from a Russian prison where he had spent the previous 10 years as part of a sentence many insist was politically motivated. 

Tens of thousands of African migrants in Tel Aviv protested against Israel's new open-ended detention law that allows migrants to be sent to a desert prison.  The UN alleges Israel's incarceration of migrants causes “hardship and suffering” and is not in line with a 1951 world treaty on the treatment of refugees.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu views the presence of many of the Africans as a threat to Israel’s Jewish social fabric.

China’s state media says 14 people were killed in a crush at a Mosque in the northwest Ningxia region.  People surged forward at a free food handout meant to commemorate a religious leader.

A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 767 made an emergency landing at Medina when its right side landing gear failed to deploy.  It was coming back from a religious pilgrimage in Iran.  29 people were injured when passengers rushed to exit the plane.

A private jet crashed at Aspen, Colorado’s airport, killing the copilot and injuring two people.  The dead man is identified as 54-year old Sergio Carranza Brabata of Mexico.  The other two people on board were from Mexico as well, and the flight originated in Toluca, west of Mexico City.  The plane is registered to an American bank. 

Meanwhile, a small plane made an emergency landing Saturday night on a New York City highway.  Plenty of New Yorkers were startled but no one was hurt.

New York firefighters had their hands full with the toughest fire to fight:  Halfway up a 43-story high-rise residential building on Manhattan.  One person is dead, and at least seven were hurt, one critically.

Construction on a planned shipping canal through Nicaragua is being delayed for a year.  It was to break ground this year, but the head of the canal authority says more time is needed to carry out studies and choose a route to link the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.  Environmentalists oppose the project, but President Daniel Ortega seems to think it’s necessary for the economic independence of the second poorest nation in the western hemisphere.

Portugal football legend Eusebio has died aged 71 from a heart attack. Born in Mozambique in 1942 when it was still a Portuguese colony, Eusebio da Silva Ferreira went on to play 64 times for Portugal, and was top scorer at the 1966 World Cup with 41 goals.
