There’s widespread flooding in some of Japan’s most-populated areas, as Typhoon Phanfone (Typhoon 18, in the Japanese system) exits to the Northwestern Pacific Ocean.  Water is knee-deep in parts of Shizuoka and Hamamatsu cities in the industrial Tokai region.  An apartment building collapsed and slid down a hill in Yokohama.  Earlier, three American military personnel were swept out to sea from Okinawa.  One body was found and the other two are still missing.  In all, two people are dead.

The typhoon is believed to have been an element in the crash that left 25-year old F1 driver Jules Bianchi with a severe injury.  Bianchi of the Marussia team slid out of control on the Suzuka track in Japan, crashing into a tractor crew that was cleaning up an earlier crash.  He underwent emergency surgery at Mie General Hospital and is in intensive care in critical condition.

The search for Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 resumed in the Indian Ocean today, more than six months after it disappeared.  The first of three ships will spend some twelve days in the search area 1,800 kilometers off Western Australia before heading back to shore for fuel and setting off again.  They’ll keep searching for a year or until they find it, which ever comes first.  Six Australian citizens are among the 239 people on board when the flight disappeared.

Four Russian police officers and a suicide bomber died in an attack in the Chechen capital Grozny, and at least twelve people were wounded.  It was the deadliest attack in years in Chechnya, where a separatist movement morphed into a Islamist insurgency in the 1990s.

A 63-year old woman who trolled the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann has been found dead in a hotel.  A few days ago, a TV News crew confronted Brenda Leyland of Burton Overy, Leicestershire about abusive messages directed at the McCanns for several years.  She replied, “I’m entitled to do that.”  Little Madeleine MCCann disappeared while the family was on holiday in Portugal in 2007.
