Angus Houston says the US Navy’s “black box” ping detector towed by the Aussie ship Ocean Shield has picked up signals “consistent with transmissions from both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder”.  He says it’s the “most promising lead” in the frustrating search for any sign of the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370.  This is in the northern part of the search area off Oz’s west coast. The missing 777-200ER with 239 people including six Australians on board vanished without a trace during a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March.

Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney has died at age 93.  Starting in the movies at just six years old in the Toonerville Trolley shorts in the 1920s and ‘30s, Rooney played a problem child in the 1938 classic Boys Town, and kept up the hopes of depression-era audience in the Andy Hardy series, and entertained the troops during World War II.  After the war and no longer a plucky teen, Rooney reinvented himself as a character actor (sometimes regrettably) and appears in more than 200 films – he never stopped working.  He is survived by his eighth wife (oh yeah, he was a serious playa in Hollywood) and nine grandkids.

The first wave of India’s 814 Million eligible voters is casting ballots today in the remote northeastern states of Assam and Tripura.  Polls suggest a power shift from the center-Left Congress Party to the BJP party led by controversial Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi.  His “Modi-nomics” are credited with economic growth in Gujarat state where he is Chief Minister, as well as criticized as a right-wing, authoritarian corporate, much like China.  The vote will take about a month to complete.

Argentina President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner (CFK) was named godmother to the baby of a lesbian couple.  Adorable little Umma Azul was baptized in a Catholic church in the city of Cordoba.  Despite the Catholic Church’s opposition to same sex marriage, Pope Francis says all children should be baptized.  CFK legalized marriage equality in Argentina in 2010.
