More than 60 women abducted by the terrorist group Boko Haram have reportedly escaped – but they’re not from the group of girl kidnapped from their school in Chibok town.  These women were among 68 abducted last month near Damboa town.  They were able to get away apparently when the Nigerian military swept in on a Boko Haram camp.

The Somali Islamist group al-Shabab claims responsibility for killing at least 29 people in two attacks on towns in Kenya’s coastal districts.  Witnesses said heavily armed men raided a trading centre in the village of Hindi and a police station in Gamba.  The attacks show that al-Shabab is able to strike at Kenyan targets with increasing ease, in revenge for Kenya’s past participation in anti-terrorism operations in Somalia.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison confirms that Australia has handed 41 asylum seekers over to Sri Lanka authorities, from whom they attempted to escape in the first place.  Sri Lanka has been criticized by many countries (including Australia as recently as 2012) for its really lousy human rights situation.  Greens leader Christine Milne says, “It is against all international law, it is against decency, it is in contravention of the United Nations and it’s appalling.”

Ukraine says government forces have retaken two more eastern cities from pro-Russian separatists.  Artyomivsk and Druzhkivka aren’t really considered strategic at Sloviansk, but the government says it shows momentum on Kiev’s side.  The rebels are attempting to regroup in Donetsk, and have reportedly attacked the state prison guard headquarters in an attempt to seize weapons. 

Hopes of finding the remaining eight miners caught in a collapse in Honduras are pretty much gone.  The shaft collapsed last Wednesday – Eleven men got out immediately, three were rescued on Friday.  The unregulated San Juan Arriba mine is one of a thousand death traps in Honduras hosting 5,000 desperate miners.  Drought and blight have ravaged coffee and other crops, and a man’s got to make a living.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s plans to restart his country’s “scientific whaling” program in the Southern Ocean overshadowed his visit to whistlestop trip to New Zealand.  Kiwi PM John Key says he reiterated New Zealand’s position that the harpooning must stop.  Tokyo called off its 2014-15 Antarctic season after the International Court of Justice ruled that the so-called “research” program was just a dodge to kill whales for commercial purposes.

The first bull run of this year’s San Fermin festival in Spain is scheduled to take place when Monday morning roles around to western Europe.  Animal rights activists held protests on the outskirts of the festival’s kick-off on Sunday, pointing out that 48 bulls are killed at the festival each year.  It’s not all that healthy for humans, either:  Last year, a 23-year old New South Wales woman was gored in the chest by one of the massive beasts.

Paul McCartney has returned to the concert stage, following the stomach illness that ended his Asian tour earlier this year.  In Albany, New York the 72-year old ex-Beatle ripped through a three-hour set of his greatest hits from the Beatles’ and Wings’ eras (except.. no “Jet”?), skipping over three decades (of dreck) and interspersing it with a handful of new songs.. and he even helped a pair of almost-senior citizens get engaged.  A triumph all the way around, I'd say.
