A mountain lion charged out of the bush near a winery in Northern California, grabbing a six-year old boy by the neck and trying to make off with him before the kid’s parents were able to get him from the animal.  The lion’s tracks showed he tracked the group of people even after the attack, as they evacuated the child for medical treatment.  This happened at the Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve in Cupertino, above Silicon Valley.  Like the rest of California, this area is experiencing a long drought, which may be responsible for an increase in animal attacks.

The verdict in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial is expected in court in Pretoria on Thursday.  Over the weekend, the fallen Olympic and Paralympic athlete reportedly angrily snapped at a reporter who simply asked him how he was doing.  Pistorius reportedly sold a number of real estate holdings to pay for his defense.  He doesn’t deny shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, but says it was a case of mistaken identity, not a planned murder as the prosecution says.

Somalia is on high-alert after last week’s US airstrike that killed the leader of the al-Shabaab group, a terrorist affiliate of al Qaeda.  It comes as Somalia has fired its security chief, only two months into the job.  A government spokesman said only that National Security Director Abdulahi Mohamed Ali had failed to fulfill his commitments.

The city of Baoshan in southwestern China has killed some 4,900 dogs after five people died of rabies.  Another 100,000 dogs were vaccinated.  Dog owners and animal rights activists say that sterilizing and vaccinating dogs rather than killing them is a much more effective means to stop the spread of rabies.
