South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar agreed to a cease-fire, after a five-month civil war that left thousands dead and more than a million homeless.  The truce is immediate and calls for a transitional government, drafting a new constitution, and new elections.  We’ll see.  The UN has told both sides they will be held responsible for war crimes, mass killings, and numerous rapes.

Amnesty International is accusing Nigeria’s military of ignoring warnings that Boko Haram was planning an attack in Chibok, the town where 270 were kidnapped – but the military failed to act.  Witnesses say the military was nowhere to be found when the girls were abducted.  53 girls escaped, but more than 200 are still being held by the Islamists, and the group’s leader has threatened to sell them.  Nigerian authorities say they doubt the Amnesty report.

Suspected al Qaeda militants attacked Yemen’s presidential palace and tried to kill the defense minister in his car.  At least four soldiers and three militants were killed in the hour-long gun battle.  It’s in retaliation for Yemen’s push against the Islamists in the north of the country.  Earlier on Friday morning, Yemeni forces killed an al Qaeda commander believed responsible for several kidnappings.

Prosecutors say Rolf Harris groomed a friend of his daughter into beginning a sexual relationship from age 13 onwards.  In the veteran entertainer’s trial in London, prosecutors painted him as a “Jekyll and Hyde” how leveraged his fame and reputation to take advantage of the girl and three others from 1968-86.  At one point, he wrote a letter to the girl’s father confessing to a sexual relationship, saying he was “sickened” by himself – but denied she was underage when the relationship began.

Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a visit to Crimea on Friday, much to the consternation of the US and EU.  Appearing before adoring crowds in Sevastopol, he presided over a military parade to mark the 70th anniversary of the city’s liberation from the nazis.  Earlier in the day, Putin oversaw an old-school military parade in Red Square, but without the Soviet Communism, it just didn’t seem as fun.  But Putin’s triumph was marred by one of the bloodiest days of fighting in Eastern Kiev, where Kiev’s forces killed at least 20-pro-Moscow separatists in Mariupol.

The European Union is expected to beef up sanctions on Russia on Monday, targeting at least four Crimea-based companies, two of which are in the energy sector.  It’s unlikely that Russia’s Gazprom will be included in this round of sanctions, as the West doesn’t want to close the final doors until there’s no more room to try to get Russia to back off in Ukraine.

Two members of the Russian Punk Rock band Pussy Riot visited an American dissident in jail on New York City’s notorious Riker’s Island.  25-year old #Occupy protester Cecily McMillan was convicted of elbowing a police officer in the eye, when all the fragile and delicate cop did was tackle her from behind, grope her breasts, and hurl her to the ground. McMillan says it was an accident.  The jury told the judge she deserves no jail time.  Pussy Riot members Nadezhda “Nadya” Tolokonnikova and Maria “Masha” Alyokhina said, “We hope that the judge doesn't make any more mistakes.”

The US is demanding China release several people detained in advance of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.  Beijing replied that Washington has no “right” or “qualification” to call for criminals to be freed.  Human Rights Watch says leading dissidents and democracy activists say that “things have gotten dramatically worse” in China.

The dirty old mayor of Bolivia’s largest city has been forced to apologize to a journalist for groping her thigh last week.  Of course, it was caught on camera, and has gone viral.  Mercedes Guzman had to pry off his nasty old fingers.  75-year old Santa Cruz Mayor Percy Fernandez has done this before – Two years ago, the city council president filed sexual harassment complaints against the dirty old man for groping her bum.
