Federal and Victoria police say two 18-year olds arrested in an anti-terrorism raid were planning an Islamic State-inspired attack on an Anzac Day ceremony.  The men are from Hallam and Hampton Park in Melbourne’s southeast.  Another man was arrested for weapons offences and two more are being questioned.  The attack allegedly was supposed to involve knives or similar weapons.  The men attended the Al Furqan Islamic study centre in South Springvale alongside Abdul Numan Haider, the man shot to death when he attacked Victoria police with a knife last September.

An American teen was found guilty of murdering Australian Baseball hopeful Christopher Lane in Oklahoma last year.  17-year old Chancey Luna was sentenced to life in prison.  Chris moved to the “Sooner State” to pursue his love of baseball.  He was jogging when he was shot in the back by Luna, who was joy-riding with two friends and playing gangsta.  The two others also face lengthy prison terms.

In Iraq, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri is dead – the red-haired 72-year old former deputy to Saddam Hussein somehow managed to elude capture after the fall of that regime in 2003.  After that, he transitioned into a military leader of an esoteric Sufi Muslim militant group that played a big role in the rise of Islamic State.  Reports of al-Douri’s death have been made before, but this one has been accompanied by a photo of the body – replete with al-Douri’s red hair, something pretty uncommon in that part of the world.

Anti-foreigner violence has spread to Johannesburg from Durban, South Africa, with cops having to form a protective barrier between foreign-owned shops and angry mobs.  At least five people have died in the violence in recent weeks, inspired by a Zulu leader who allegedly said migrants from elsewhere in Africa were stealing South African jobs.  After days of silence, President Jacob Zuma has finally condemned the violence.  Critics say he did so less emphatically than he defended the expenditure of state funds to expand his private home compound.

Canada has charged four British sailors with gang raping a civilian female at a barracks in Nova Scotia.  The men will spend the weekend in jail while the two countries work out bail arrangements.  They were in Nova Scotia participating in a hockey tournament with local Armed Forces personnel.

The daughter of genocidal Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt is running for president of that country as the candidate of the Christian conservative Vision with Values party.  Zury Rios Sosa de Weller was just a 14-year old debutante when her father unleashed military death squads to commit widespread massacres, rape, torture, and acts of genocide against indigenous villages that daddy believed were “Leftist”.  Critics blast Rios Sosa for denying the genocide.

A professional game hunter is dead, trampled to death by the bull elephant he was tracking to kill.  So, self-defense, right?  Right.  Ian Gibson of the Safari Classics Company was leading a client to kill the beast in Zimbabwe.  Somewhere along the trail, the bull turned and charged 50 meters and stomped Gibson.  “The scene was very graphic,” according to a note from the company posted online.

A family visiting Omaha, Nebraska’s Henry Doorley Zoo in Middle America got the shock of their lives when a 225-kilogram Silverback Gorilla charged and broke the “unbreakable” safety glass separating the apes from the people.  The big fellow was getting a little tired of being stared at and charged twice.  The second time, he pumped his fist into the glass, causing it to crack.  The guy who uploaded the scary video commented online, “Shortly before this we were telling the kids they could not break (the glass).  They will never believe us again.”
