The world’s coolest Finance Minister and former Sydneysider Yanis Varoufakis says the Greek government will not negotiate with the European troika over the conditions of Greece’s bailout, and will deal with European leaders directly.  The new Left-wing Syriza government says the terms are too harsh, and has already defied the austerity imposed by Europe with actions such as raising the minimum wage and rehiring laid-off government workers.  European officials insist that Greece must stick with the terms of the deal.

An explosion ripped through a Shiite mosque in Shikarpur, Pakistan during Friday prayers, killing at least 55 people and leaving 59 or more injured.  A splinter group from the Pakistani Taliban called Jundullah took credit for the mass murder.  Southern Sindh province hasn’t seen much of the Shiite-versus-Sunni violence that’s rocked the country in recent decades, but this seems to end it.

Mexican doctors are collecting DNA samples from nine infants who survived the gas explosion at a maternity hospital in the capital city.  They’ll use them to match the babies with their families.  Their families already identified many of the surviving babies, and most of their ID bracelets were intact.  But the bracelets on the nine were lost making the DNA tests necessary.

A massive fire at Moscow’s INION library went up in flames this week.  Officials are assessing the damage.  Founded in 1918, INION is home to more than 14 million books, including rare texts in ancient Slavic languages, as well as documents from the League of Nations, UNESCO, and parliamentary reports from countries including the US dating back as far as 1789. 

Russia awarded the contract for building a bridge to Crimea to a long-time friend of President Vladimir Putin.  Arkady Rotenberg, a childhood friend and judo partner of the Russian president, and under western economic sanctions related to Russia’s occupation of Crimea.  Russia has no land connection to Crimea, and transport is achieved by sea and air.  The bridge is planned for the Kerch Strait which separates the Black Sea from the Sea of Azov.

At least 5,000 people protested outside a lavish ball in Vienna that attracted members of Europe’s far-right and neo-nazi scumbags, an event hosted by Austria’s ironically-named Freedom Party.  Cops locked down several blocks of downtown Vienna to secure the area for the fascists.  Around 38 good guy protesters were arrested, and police say vandalism around the Hofburg Palace will cost some A$1.5 Million to repair.  One police officer was injured by fireworks. 

A court in South Africa granted parole to Eugene De Kock, the former commander of the apartheid government’s Vlakplaas police unit – a death squad that killed and maimed anti-apartheid activists in the 1980s and early 1990s.  How bad was this guy?  His nickname was “Prime Evil”.  De Kock served 20-years in prison, after being sentenced to two life terms and a further 212 years for his heinous and disgusting crimes.  Now 66-years old, De Kock insists he was singled out to take the fall for apartheid while the commanders and generals who ordered the crimes never served a day in prison. 

Argentine investigators say the DNA tests are complete on the gun used in the death of a prosecutor who accused the president of wrongdoing – and only the prosecutor’s DNA is on the weapon.  Alberto Nisman was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on 18 January, in the bathroom of his 13th storey apartment that was locked from the inside.  He accused President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of trying to impede the investigation into the 1994 terrorist bombing of a Jewish community center in exchange for a lucrative Iranian oil deal.  CFK denies it, and the big, big hole in this story that no one is talking about is that Nisman’s office has not produced any evidence backing up the charge.

Police in India rescued scored of children from slave labor conditions in a series of raids in Hyderabad.  Some of the kids were as young as six years old.  Many were trafficked from the north after being sold by impoverished parents; som were sick, gaunt, and underfed; all complained of being forced to work 16 hour days with threats of vilence and food deprivation.  31 traffickers and agents have been arrested and charged with child slavery.
