Beaches around Riecks Point, north of Coffs Harbour, NSW will remain closed as police continue to investigate the fatal shark attack on Saturday.  19-year old Zac Young of Port Macquarie was bitten across both legs on Saturday, his first surfing road trip after getting his driver’s license.  His mates braved the danger to pull him to safety but they couldn’t save him.  It’s the first fatal shark attack in NSW since 2008, and comes a week after a shark killed a surfer off WA.

A rescue and recovery operation continues in Glasgow after a police helicopter dropped out of the sky and crashed into a popular pub and music venue as a local Ska band played before more than a hundred people.  At least eight people are confirmed dead, including all three on the Eurocopter EC135 T2 which lost power.  But several people are missing, and Scottish officials fear the death toll will go higher.

Ukraine’s opposition is calling for early elections amid the massive street protests against the government’s decision to jilt Europe and seek closer economic ties to Moscow.  Several western countries condemned Kiev’s violent dispersal of protesters, who merely regrouped and returned to the capital.  A larger rally is expected on Sunday.

Thailand’s political protests have turned violent:  At least one person was killed and three wounded by gunfire after rival protesters attacked each other in Bangkok.  People heading to a pro-government rally were set upon by the opposition who had occupied the streets for seven days.  It’s not yet clear who fired the shots.

North Korea has released a video of an elderly US tourist more than a month after pulling him off an airplane as he was leaving the country.  In it, 85-year old Merrill Newman reads a “confession” verbatim, complete with stilted English and grammatical errors such as, “I want not punish me.”  Newman is a Korean War veteran.  Some officials believe the confession in the form of an apology is a precursor to North Korea releasing Newman without having to hold a trial.

The US is advising its international airlines to comply with Chinese demands to file flight plans when they cross the territory in the East China Sea claimed by Beijing for its new Air Defense Zone.  A US statement said this did not mean the US accepted China's requirements in the zone covering territory claimed by China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.  In the week since China unilaterally declared the zone, the US, South Korea, and Japan have flown military planes through it, unannounced.

A Mozambique Airlines passenger plane has been found crashed and burned at about the halfway point on its journey.  There are no survivors.  (Warning:  Crash site video is graphic at times and may be inappropriate for younger or more sensitive viewers)  Flight TM470 took off from the country's capital, Maputo with 34 people on Friday and was supposed to fly to Luanda, Angola.  The crash site is in Angola’s Bwabwata National Park, located in the eastern panhandle.

Despite an outcry from some local religious officials, the new US Ambassador to the Dominican Republic has taken up his post and introduced his husband to the country.  Some Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders opposed the appointment of James “Wally” Brewster who has traveled the world with husband Bob Satawake, and they’ve visited the country many times.  Brewster says he’s aware of the challenges but looks forward to the gig.
