The big powers reach a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program – China decides to take possession of a vast swath of territory south of Japan – The Supermarket collapse that killed dozens in Latvia might be a murder investigation – And shark warnings are out in WA after a deadly attack.

Take care in the Northern Territories!  A Cyclone Warning is out for coastal areas from Mitchell Plateau to Point Stuart, including Darwin and the Tiwi Islands, because Cyclone Alessia.  The strongest winds arrive later Sunday and into Monday.  Powerful storms and localized flooding is expected, so let’s be careful out there. 

Iran and the six world powers have reached a deal on Tehran’s nuclear program, possibly the most significant peace deal achieved in decades.  It freezes Iran’s nuclear program and lays the groundwork for a future, more sweeping accord, in exchange for ending billions of dollars in economic sanctions against Tehran.  US President Obama is hailing the deal, saying it imposes “substantial limitations which will prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon.”

The US says it is “deeply concerned” about China’s unilateral declaration of a new air defense zone that includes some Japanese Islands that Beijing has recently claimed.  Washington is vowing to defend Japan and not to allow any party to disrupt the status quo in East Asia.  China released a map of its new self-proclaimed air defense zone claiming most of the area between Taiwan and Southern Japan and South Korea.

Latvian president Andris Berzins says the investigation into the deadly collapse of a supermarket roof should be treated as a “murder” case.  At least 54 people have died since the structure caved in on after-work shoppers, and more pieces fell on rescuers.  Subsequent cave-ins were caught on video.  At least even people are missing.  It happened while crews built a rooftop garden for the Maxima Supermarket in the capital city Riga.

Egypt has expelled Turkey’s ambassador, blaming “provocative” criticisms of Cairo by Turkey’s Islamist Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan – an ally of ousted president and Muslim Brotherhood member Mohammed Morsi.  Erdogan is unapologetic, calling Egypt’s interim government a “pro-coup administration”.  Turkey is expected to reciprocate.

Two government airstrikes killed around 40 people in a rebel-held town near Aleppo, Syria.  The victims are all civilians, because the forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad missed their mark – they had targeted something else but instead struck at a vegetable market.  To prevent the spread of disease, a vaccination campaign to immunize half a million children under five against measles and polio will finally begin on Monday.

Bodies are still being recovered in the central Philippines, two weeks after Typhoon Haiyan leveled much of area.  The government is admitting that the death toll that it earlier sought to downplay is now 5,235 lives lost, with 1,613 still missing and 23,501 injured.  Senior United Nations relief coordinator Valerie Amos says food, water, and medical aid is now reaching 2.5 Million people, but so much more has to be done.

Venezuelan authorities arrested an aide to opposition leader and failed presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, before protest marches were to take place.  President Nicolas Maduro says he authorized the arrest of opposition officials he claims were planning to stage a false flag attack on their own protesters and blame it on the government. 

Thousands marched in cities across Spain, angry at the economically crippling effects of “austerity”.  They’re demanding that the deeply unpopular conservative government re-think its policy of cutbacks in public services, education and health care. 

West Australian beaches remain closed after the Saturday morning death of 35-year old Chris Boyd, a father of two and a celebrity in the surfing world.  He died Saturday morning, attacked by a Great White Shark in waters off Gracetown, about 300 kilometers south of Perth.  Boyd id originally from Queensland but moved to WA about a year ago to chase bigger waves.
