At least 29 people are dead in clashes as supporters and opponents of Egypt’s military government faced off.  The occasion was supposed to be the anniversary of the 2011 uprising that overthrew Hosni Mubarek.  The crowd in Tahrir Square was mostly pro-military, and security forces dealt harshly with opponents.

Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych is offering the posts of Prime minister and Deputy Prime Minister to opposition leaders Arseny Yatsenyuk and former boxer Vitali Klitschko respectively.  That didn’t do much to disperse opposition protesters manning barricades in Independence Square.  And Arseny Yatsenyuk said that the opposition is ready to take the reigns of power and lead Ukraine into a political and economic alliance with the European Union.

The government and opposition sat in the same room and same table at the Syrian Civil War peace talks in Geneva.  Neither side said anything, but at least they were there at the same table.  UN negotiators led the discussions on getting some sort of cease-fire in effect so that aid can be brought in to the people devastated by the nearly three-year old conflict.

Syrian rebels posted video to the internet showing the exact moment a toddler was apparently rescued from the rubble of a bombing.  Men are seen digging frantically through rubble with their bare hands, until the kid in an orange jumper is pulled out.  The toddler appears dazed but breathing, blinking slowly and attempting to block the bright sunlight.  The Syrian government has been devastating its own people with multiple air attacks in rebel-held areas.

The leaders of Thailand’s anti-democracy protests says his followers will not block people from voting in next week’s elections, but rather will demonstrate outside polling places.  The opposition wants the elected government to step down so that reforms can be put in place by an appointed panel of “good people”.  The bane of the opposition’s existence, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, says the election will go on as scheduled.  Yingluck’s ruling party is expected to win.

A gunman stormed a shopping mall in Columbia, Maryland outside Washington, DC on America’s east coast, killing a man and a woman.  The attack then apparently turned took his own life.  Shoppers described a panicked situation with people trying to shelter in stores.  The victims worked at a store specializing in skate accessories and clothing. 

As feared, the death toll in the Quebec, Canada nursing home fire is mounting.  At least ten bodies have been found out of 32 missing.  Thursday’s blaze raced through the wooden structure, which was mostly without a sprinkler fire suppression system.  The residents were all elderly, most with mobility issues.  But because of the deep Canadian cold, water from the fire hoses froze quickly, and the ice more than 60 centimeters think in some parts.

French President Francois Hollande announced he has separated from his partner Valerie Trierweiler, after tabloids caught him in an affair with an actress, Julie Gayet. Trierweiler has continued as a reporter for the glossy magazine Paris-Match, but will no longer act as France’s de facto First Lady.  On Saturday evening she tweeted her thanks to the “wonderful staff” at the Elysee Palace, now her former coworkers.

Justin Bieber bugged out of Florida where he spent a night in jail for street racing a Lambo on the streets of Miami Beach.  The over-privileged pop singer boarded a private plane in Opa-Locka and was spotted on a beach in Punta Chame, Panama.  With his pants half way down his bum.  Class act, kid.  Former Men At Work singer Colin Hay wrote an open letter to Bieber, reminding the teen sensation that he, too, had been on top of the world for a couple of years.. but “when the dust settled, I was alone. I looked around and everyone had left the party.”  But we’ll never forget you, Colin.
