The US is pressing Israel to explain the brutal beating of an American teen in East Jerusalem.  Two Israeli border guards were caught on video delivering a two-on-one beatdown to 15-year old Tariq Khdeir from Florida, for allegedly throw rocks and Molotov Cocktails (American cops have their own caught-on-video problem, see below).  The kid is presently being held in jail.  Photographs taken later show him with a severely swollen face.  Tariq was there for the funeral of his cousin Mohammed Abu Khdeir – the Palestinian teen whose murder sparked days of riots in East Jerusalem and beyond.

Palestinian officials say that 16-year old Mohammed Abu Khdeir was burned alive.  They say the coroner’s report showed soot inside the teen’s lung.  Palestinians widely believe that Mohammed was kidnapped and tortured to death by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, in revenge for the abduction and murders of three Israeli teens earlier.  Israeli police haven’t yet established a motive.

Pro-Russian separatists have abandoned Sloviansk, allowing Ukrainian government troops to recapture the town.  Kiev released photos showing Ukraine’s flag is flying above government buildings again.  The separatists still hold other regional capitals, but Sloviansk was their epicenter and the heart of the so-called “People’s Republican of Donetsk”.

Eleven parachutists were killed when their plane crashed in southern Poland near Czestochowa.  Only one person on the plane survived, but suffered severe injuries.  Witnesses said the plane was flying low, appeared to be tilting, and its engines were sputtering before the crash.

China’s appetite for Ivory isn’t just wiping out elephant populations in Africa – it’s providing an income source for terrorists in Africa as well.  A report published by the United Nations Environment Program says the “Lord’s Resistance Army” led by the notorious Joseph Kony rakes in between US$4 and $12 Million a year by trafficking.  Al-Shabab, which has staged several deadly attacks in Kenya and Somalia, also profits from trafficking in poached tusks.  Beijing acknowledges a problem and has ratcheted up penalties for people trafficking in or purchasing ivory.

The jihadist group ISIS released a video of its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi delivering a sermon at a captured mosque, in which he calls on Muslims to obey him.  The captions identify al-Baghdadi as “Caliph Ibrahim”, and he insists the leadership he seeks was thrust upon him.  And then he tells the faithful to kill their enemies, so, there’s that.

The Afghani Taliban set fire to 200 to 400 oil tanker trucks used for supplying fuel for NATO forces, in an attack just outside the capital Kabul.  Police believe the terrorist attached magnetic bombs to the sides of the tankers and set them off.

The California Highway Patrol says it will investigate a video posted on YouTube that shows a burly white cop delivering a MMA-style ground and pound on a shoeless, obviously mentally-ill, homeless, African-American woman.  Recorded by a passing motorist in Los Angeles, the cop is seen delivering at least 11 blows to her head.  Civil rights leaders are asking the US Justice Department to open an investigation.  The CHP says it can handle the investigation on its own.  The officer is on administrative leave.

A Great White Shark bit a long distance swimmer off Southern California’s Manhattan Beach, and the swimmer is recovering.  The two-meter shark was trying to free itself from a fisherman’s line, when the group of swimmers came by, and the shark lashed out (with its teeth), biting the man in the upper torso.  The swimmer is in hospital in stable condition, the shark got away.
