Thailand’s appointed parliament voted coup leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha to be the new Prime Minister.  The general ousted any remnants of democracy in May when he took control of government following months of political deadlock and street protests by conservatives who haven’t won an election in decades.  For some reason, they’ll go through the formality of having the king approve Prayuth’s appointment, and then the general will appoint a cabinet.

The UN Security Council is expressing “grave concern” over Gaza, where Palestinians and Israel are back to shooting at each other.  The Security Council is calling “upon the parties to resume negotiations to urgently reach a sustainable and lasting ceasefire”.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing to continue the campaign to crush Gaza militants.  Israel’s military says it carried out 92 air strikes on Wednesday in response to 137 rockets fired from Gaza.
