The horse-racing world is in shock after the tragic death of 26-year old jockey Simone Montgomerie at Darwin’s Fannie Bay Racecourse.  She was coming around the final turn of the sixth race but was thrown from her horse and trampled by the rest of the field.  Doctors tried to treat her at the scene, but she died at Royal Darwin Hospital later.  Riders and trainers are understandable upset, and the rest of the Darwin’s cup has been canceled.

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos is reassuring employees of his latest acquisition, the Washington Post newspaper.  Yes, THAT Washington Post, the one that brought down Richard Nixon and largely functions as one of America’s newpapers-of-record (the other being the New York Times).  Bezos told staffers “the values of The Post” do not need changing”, and he would not be involved in the day-to-day operations.  But The Post’s Liberal columnist Ezra Klein questioned how long the billionaire could resist merging Amazon.com’s interests (America’s minimum wage, sales taxes, trade with China, etc.) with his new megaphone.  I don’t know, let’s ask Murdoch.

Spain rearrested Daniel Galvan Vina, the convicted pedophile who was released from a Moroccan prison after serving two years of a 30-year sentence.  He’ll be hauled before a court in Madrid to learn if he will indeed be sent back over the Straits of Gibraltar.  Galvan was released after a reported request from Spain’s king to the king of Morocco.  But that pardon was revoked after angry demonstrations by hundreds demanding Galvan’s rearrest.

British Police arrested Rolf Harris for a second time in Operation Yewtree, the sex abuse investigation that began with the inquiry into sexual offenses by BBC personality Jimmy Savile and others.  The 83-year old was released on bail for a second time.  Harris has not been formally charged.

The former children’s puppeteer from a Christian television show called “Joy Junction” in Florida has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for plotting to kidnap, rape, murder, and eat toddlers and young boys from his church.  Prosecutors wanted the maximum 30-year sentence.  Cops say 58-year old Ronald William Brown was hoarding distressing images of dead children in his porn stash inside his trailer home in the hellhole known as Clearwater, Florida.

America’s biggest baseball star is banned.  Major League baseball suspended New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez until the end of the 2014 season for violating the league’s ban on steroids and performance enhancing drugs.  Twelve more players were also suspended and will not contest the decision.  A-Rod is contesting the ban, and will be allowed to play through his appeal.

The bomb that exploded inside the Ekayana Buddhist Center in Jakarta, Indonesia wasn’t much, it didn’t even break the glass on the center’s door.  But it comes amid rising tension between Buddhists and Muslims in Southeast Asia and after cops broke up a plot to bomb Buddhist Myanmar’s embassy in Jakarta.  Militants also bombed the Buddhist complex in India where Prince Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment.  It’s believed Islamist militants are seeking revenge over violence in Myanmar that killed more than 200 Muslims.

Johannesburg officials are apologizing to the father of modern South Africa Nelson Mandela for sending a warning notice that his water and electricity might be cut off over an unpaid bill.  The notice was sent to the wrong home.  It turns out the errant customer lives at the same house number and street name, but in a different suburb.  The 95-year old for President, political prisoner, and inspiration to millions around the world has been in hospital since 8 June with a stubborn lung infection.
