Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is visiting Canberra to sign bilateral accords on free trade, as well as deals on cooperation on defense equipment and technology with the Abbott government.  In an address before Parliament, Abe clarified his reinterpretation of the pacifist Constitution to enable its Self-Defense Forces to come to the aid of allies under attack in collective self-defense:  He said Japan will never again follow the path of aggression and war. 

A Croc handler is recovering after frightening moment with one of his charges.  One of the beasts – 3.7 meters long –  bit Trent Burton of the Shoalhaven Zoo in North Nowra, NSW on the hand, and tried to drag him underwater in the Zoo’s enclosure.  He’s reportedly still got feeling in his fingers, which means Trent might have escaped nerve damage. 

At least three people are dead, many are injured, and dozens of buildings are damaged after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas and Central America.  People felt it as far north as Mexico City, through central Guatemala and as far south as El Salvador.  Numerous collapses and landslides are reported on Guatamala’s San Marcos state.

A US Citizen in Ghana tested negative for Ebola disease.  The patient fell ill after visiting two of the countries currently fighting the West African Ebola Outbreak, which has killed 467 people so far.  Another round of tests will be conducted to be certain. 

Honduras has suspended the search for eight missing miners.  The unlicensed mine collapsed last Wednesday, and three men were rescued a couple of days later.  But the entrance to the tunnel was caved in, and the geologists say that and the poor state of the shaft make it too dangerous to continue search and recovery efforts.

Filming on Star Wars: Episode VII has been delayed for two weeks because of the broken leg that Harrison Ford suffered in an accident involving a garage door earlier this month.  The 71-year-old actor underwent surgery and began rehab on his leg last month.  The film is still on track for a December 2015 release.
