Eight people are recovering from various injuries after a bomb exploded next to an underground train station in Santiago, Chile.  The government calls it a “terrorist” act that was “carried out with the intention of hurting innocent people”.  Chile has for 24 years been one of Latin America’s most stable countries, but there’ve been a number of low-level attacks by anarchist groups in recent years.  The government will invoke anti-terrorism laws that allow for more police powers and harsher sentencing.

2,500 people are homeless after a massive fire swept through the Buraco Quente favela (shantytown) in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Campo Belo district.  It destroyed at least 600 homes mostly made of scavenged wood and cardboardResidents said the firefighters ran out of water at about three hours after arriving because the area lacks proper public services.  Fire officials deny it and blame “drug dealers” for setting the fire.

An attacker stabbed a United States Air Marshal with a syringe at the airport in Lagos, Nigeria, apparently injecting an unknown substance into the man’s arm.  He later flew back to Houston, Texas and is under quarantine in hospital.  The man has not exhibited any symptoms of anything, however there is great concern because of the West African Ebola Outbreak that’s killed more than 2,000 people in the region, as well as general anti-American sentiment in some quarters.  The FBI says that test conducted so far reveals nothing that would have put any other passengers at risk.

Iran says it has arrested Afghans and Pakistanis who were trying to cross to Iraq and join Islamic State.  Authorities did not say how many there were, where they were arrested, or where they are being held.  Iran is Shiite, and opposed to the radical Sunnis of Islamic State who have undermined Tehran’s allies in Syria and Iraq.  Sunni Saudi Arabia. America’s National Football League (NFL) is under fire after horrible video emerged showing football star Ray Rice punching his future wife in the face, knocking her cold.  The security video was taken in the elevator of an Atlantic City hotel.  Once the video got out, he was cut from the Baltimore Ravens and the NFL suspended him.  NFL officials claim they never saw the video before – but the league a few weeks ago suspended Rice for two games because of domestic abuse for the very same incident.  BY comparison, six players were suspended for longer periods because of testing positive for marijuana.  This is leading to allegations that the league is out of touch with reality, and blind to sexual and spousal abuse.  There are calls for the NFL’s commissioner Roger Goodell to step down.

For another glance into the meth-like cook house brewing up America’s toxic masculinity problems that is American football, consider Penn State:  The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) decided it’s time to get back to making money, and rolled back the penalties leveled at Penn State for the child sexual abuse scandal that swamped the university three years ago.  Back then, assistant Football Coach Jerry Sandusky was eventually fired and sent to prison for life for repeatedly raping young boys brought in to see the football program as part of an inner city youth outreach.  And the school’s beloved head coach was axed and died in disgrace after it was determined that he knew about it, but did nothing in order to keep the incredibly lucrative program going.

A fire heavily damaged the iconic Colossus roller coaster at Los Angeles, California’s Magic Mountain amusement Park.  Parts of the old-school wooden structure and the track had collapsed.  No one was riding on it, the Colossus was being taken down to be replaced by a new ride that will combine the old wooden style with a modern (safer) steel structure.  The Colossus has been featured in many Hollywood movies and TV productions – but none was worse than “KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park”.
