Where did July go?  That was quick.  Africa’s oldest dictator might face an end to power – A mass murderer thinks he deserves to go back to school – Marriage equality spreads to another territory – and China is growing new teeth using what?

Zimbabwe's dictator Robert Mugabe he will step down after 33 years in power if he loses Wednesday's election.  If the vote is fair, it appears to be a close race between the 89-year old Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.  However the opposition is accusing Mugabe of doctoring the voter roles, and heavily armed riot police were already deployed to polling locations before the vote even starts.

A European Union envoy has held a two-hour meeting with the deposed Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi. Catherine Ashton says Morsi is in good health, and “has access to information, in terms of TV, newspapers, so we were able to talk about the situation”.  Cashton is the first foreign diplomat to meet with Morsi since he was ousted on 3 July and detained by the military.

Italy held a mass funeral for the 38 victims of Sunday night’s bus crash.  Prime Minister Enrico Letta was among about 4,000 people at the service, which was held in a sports hall instead of a church.  The bus lost control on a bridge near Monteforte Irpino, hitting several other cars and plunging into a ravine.

Mass murderer Anders Breivik applied to take classes at Oslo University, and the staff is not happy about that.  Two years ago, Breivik detonated a bomb in downtown Oslo and then grabbed his assault weapon and gunned down 77 people, mostly children and all unarmed, at a Labor Party youth camp near the Norwegian capital.  Several college staffers told Norway’s TV2 news that they are opposed to any dealings with the cowardly killer.

A water main spectacularly failed in Campo Grande, near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The giant fountain flooded the neighborhood, swamping homes and submerging cars.  A 3-year old girl was killed.  Brazil’s crumbling infrastructure was one the three major complaints of millions of protesters who objected to the government spending public money on bringing the Pope, the World Cup, and the Olympics to Brazil.

Colima became the latest Mexican state to allow same-sex civil unions on Monday after a majority of lawmakers passed a change in the state's constitution.  Only two lawmakers voted against the motion, arguing that Colima should go all the way and allow equal marriage rights.  Mexico City and the southern state of Quintana Roo both allow gay marriage, while Coahuila allows same-sex civil unions.  Across Latin America, same sex couples are entitled to get married in Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil.

Scientists in China have found a way to grow new teeth, but you might not want to put them in your mouth.  The study published in Cell Regeneration Journal says human urine could be used as a source of stem cells to grow tiny tooth-like structures known as “tooth buds”.  The Chinese Academy of Sciences created new teeth for mice using a similar process and believes bioengineered tooth buds could one day be implanted into the jaws of people who have lost teeth.  I’ll take the dentures instead, thank you very much.
