Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and his bodyguard stopped a knife-wielding Palestinian who had just stabbed a man at a cross walk in the busy city. Barkat lept from his car – which just happened to be driving by – and tackled the 18-year old while the bodyguard held him at bay until police arrived. The attacker’s motives weren’t immediately clear, but it followed a series of similar attacks that began after the smoke cleared from last year’s Gaza war. The victim was stabbed in the stomach and is in hospital.
Gaza authorities rushed to evacuate more than 80 homes after Israel opened a dam, flooding the Gaza Valley up to three meters in the lowest-lying places. 80 families were forced to flee and are in emergency shelters, such as they are in a place that was torn asunder by a war last year. The Palestinians accuse Israel of giving Gaza no warning of the impending flood.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is calling for a joint Arab military force to deal with the ever-growing presence of armed factions, such as the new Islamic State (IS) affiliate that sprang up next door in Libya. It’s the first public acknowledgment from an Arab leader that such a force is necessary. Al-Sisi says both Jordan and the United Arab Emirates have offered to dispatch military forces to aid Egypt following last week's beheading in Libya of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians by IS. Meanwhile, Egypt’s top Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb of Cairo’s al-Azhar University is calling for religious teaching reform to prevent future militants. Al-Tayeb blames a historical misreading of the Koran for creating “bad interpretations” by terrorists.
The US Department of Homeland Security is warning American shoppers to be on alert after a video threat from the Somalian terrorist group Al Shabaab. The group is calling on wanna-be jihadis to strike out at shopping malls inm the US and Canada – specifically, the Mall of America in Minnesota, where there is a large Somalian immigrant population. Al Shabaab was responsible for the 2013 attack on Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi that killed 67 people.
Bangladesh now says at least 66 people died in the ferry accident on the mighty Padma River. Half of those 66 bodies recovered so far are those of women and children. Around 50 people were rescued or managed to swim to shore on their own, but there were more than 150 passengers and crew on board when the boat when it collided with a trawler. Police have seized the trawler and arrested the captain and his two crewmembers.
Colombia is joining a “biological corridor” which connects forests from 13 nations from Mexico to Argentina, to ensure the health, reproduction, and survival of jaguars – which are at risk because of farms moving in on their habitat, as well as over-hunting. Governments will share ideas for conservation plans and promote exchanges of genetic material to maintain healthy populations.
