Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced plans to accept 12,000 refugees from the war zones in Iraq and Syria, on top of the 13,750 overall intake of confirmed refugees for 2015. "This is a very significant increase in Australia's humanitarian intake and it's a generous response to the current emergency," Mr. Abbott said in Canberra, specifying that the offer is extended to "women, children and families from persecuted minorities who have sought temporary refuge in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey". But Abbott said that Muslim and non-Muslim are being persecuted, and Australia will "prioritize all of them". Pressed for details, Abbott listed Christians, Yazidis, Druze, and Muslim minorities.
PM Abbott also confirmed that RAAF warplanes will extend air strikes to include both Iraq and Syria - which the government insists is legal under the principle of collective self defense. But unlike Iraq, is a sovereign state that didn't ask for international help in fighting rebel groups. Independent MP Andrew Wilkie notes that the UN has not approved of air strikes in Syria, and says Abbott's plans are illegal, reckless, and dangerous. Other critics say more bombs will create more refugees and make the crisis worse.
In Strasbourg, the European Commission will announce plans to deal with the crisis of refugees into the continent - 366,000 of them so far this year according to the UN. It's expected that the commission will announce that 120,000 asylum seekers will be distributed among EU member countries, with binding quotas - something opposed by the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Romania.
Hungary's N1TV fired a video camera operator after she was caught tripping and kicking refugees as they rushed past police lines. Petra Laszlo is seen throwing some basic martial arts side kicks at young children, and sticking her foot out in front of an older man carrying a very small child. International reporters covering the story could hardly believe what they had seen. N1TV is closely associated with Hungary's fascist and anti-immigrant Jobbik party, but quickly disassociated itself with Laszlo has condemnation came in from all over the world. Opposition groups plans to press charges - she could get as much as five years in prison if convicted.
At least 13 people were hurt when a British Airways jet caught fire at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, but amazingly there were only minor injuries. The left engine suffered some sort of catastrophic failure before takeoff, and 172 people had to bail out - quickly - via the emergency slides. The fire sent a column of thick smoke over the Nevada desert. Passengers reportedly applauded the flight crew once everyone was safe and back in the terminal.
Typhoon #18 ("Etau" in the International Naming System) slammed into Japan's central region between Nagoya and Tokyo, drenching the country's industrial heartland. Rivers are running high and fast from Mie Prefecture in the west all the way over to Toyko. Street flooding was a problem in Hamamatsu and Shizuoka.
It turns out that elephants hate brunch. Some tourists from California were sitting down to brunch in Zimbabwe, and a young bull elephant crashed the party. Literally.
