From Melbourne and seven more Australian cities all the way around the globe to New York City, hundreds of thousands of people marched in cities across the world to demand urgent action on climate change and an end to coal and gas as energy sources.

After massive wildfires and drought, protesters in Australia say the Abbott government needs to do more to tackle climate change.  Greens leader Christine Milne spoke about people hanging on in spaces that are slowly being erased by climate change, like Tuvalu and Kiribati.  Estimates of the crowd in Melbourne range from 10,000 (Victoria Police), to 20,000 (350.org), to 30,000 (Fairfax News).

By far the largest rally took place in New York City, with 310,000 people marching with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who reminded the crowd the there is no “Plan B” for the climate because we’ve only got the one planet.  Also marching:  Former US Vice President Al Gore, French Ecology minister Segolene Royal, bearded actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and other luminaries.
