The Syrian Civil War is a cesspool of war crimes and crimes against humanity, according to UN investigators.  Both the Syrian government and Sunni militants with the terrorist group Islamic State are guilty, apparently locked in a contest of which can be worse.

A court in Quito sentenced six police officers to twelve years in prison apiece for attempting to kill President Rafael Correa during the attempted coup d’etat in 2010.  Correa famously faced down that mutiny in which eight people including one of his bodyguards were killed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko held their first meeting since June, resulting in two hours of late-night talks to work on an urgent ceasefire plan to defuse the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine.
