As the death toll from the West Africa Ebola Outbreak hit 1,350, one of the worst-hit countries is taking drastic measures to halt the spread of the deadly virus.  Police in the Liberian capital Monrovia fired on hundreds of protesters trying to break the quarantine on the impoverished West Point neighborhood.

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) says the death toll in the West African Ebola Outbreak is now 1,350, with the addition of 130 fatalities from the day before.  And another troubling statistic is emerging – about 75 percent of the people contracting Ebola are women.

US President Barack Obama confirmed that the person beheaded in a gruesome video released by Islamic State was indeed American journalist James Foley.  That came as Washington made the stunning revelation that it had “boots on the ground” in the middle of the Syrian Civil War on a failed hostage rescue mission.

Authorities say there are still seven people missing from huge landslides from the hills over Hiroshima in western Japan.  So far, 39 people are dead, including a rescuer who was killed by a secondary slide after he had pulled five others to safety.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko will meet with top European officials next week to attempt to turn down the heat in the Ukraine Crisis.  This comes as Ukrainian forces are gradually retaking territory from Moscow-backed separatists in the east of the country.

As Islamic State attempts to carve a new Sunni fundamentalist Caliphate out of Iraq and Syria, the highest religious authority in the most-powerful Sunni nation is calling the group apostates and the “number one enemy of Islam”.

The Gaza truce is, for now, in tatters.  Hamas and Israel have withdrawn their negotiators after both sides went back to shooting missiles at each other.  Hamas confirmed it launched 50 rockets onto Israeli territory, and Israeli Defense Forces responded with missile attacks on at least ten “terror sites” in Gaza.

Islamic State (IS) released a gruesome and horrific video showing the beheading of American photojournalist James Wright Foley, who was captured by gunmen 21 months ago while attempting to cover the Syrian Civil War.  The Sunni militants say it’s a warning to the US not to keep intervening in Iraq.

It was only a week ago that the death toll in the West African Ebola Outbreak topped 1,000.  Today, the US World Health Organization says it’s now 1,229 patients killed since the beginning of the outbreak earlier this year.  Liberia is reporting what passes for good news in this disaster.

Pope Francis has cleared the way for the likely beatification of Salvadoran Bishop Oscar Romero, who was murdered while celebrating mass in 1980.  The Catholic Church had previously banned any talk of such an honor for Romero over concerns that he harbored Marxist ideas.

Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine deny launching an attack on a convoy of vehicles moving refugees from the Luhansk area.  Ukrainian officials say that “dozens” of civilians have been killed, including women and children.

There are now more African Elephants being killed every year than are being born, and the killing is being driven by Asia’s appetite for illegal ivory.  A new report is warning that if this rate of poaching continues, the animals could be wiped out in 100 years.

Liberia is now admitting that it does not know the whereabouts of 17 people who fled an Ebola treatment center in the capital Monrovia.  People went running after a neighborhood mob attacked the facility and made off with the used bedding and other items used by patients with the deadly, contagious disease.

Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have agreed to extend the Gaza truce for another 24 hours.  The Egyptian government which is hosting the talks says that both sides had agreed to continue negotiations in Cairo to try and reach a permanent deal.

A private autopsy requested by the family of 18-year old Michael Brown, the teen gunned down by police in a suburb of Saint Louis, showed he was shot six times, from the front – including in the eye and the top of the head.  Police had claimed that Brown had tried to grab an officer’s gun and was killed in the struggle.

Ireland’s justice minister says she is “concerned” about the young woman and baby at the center of renewed debate over the country’s highly restrictive abortion laws.  Despite last year’s change allowing suicidal women to get the procedure, and a panel of experts agreeing she was at risk of suicide, the woman was coerced into having a caesarean.

With the expiration of the latest five-day ceasefire in Gaza coming up at midnight on Monday, Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have resumed indirect peace talks in Cairo.  Israel preempted any agreement with a unilateral goodwill gesture to the Palestinians of Gaza.
